Its impact on rural life has been so dramatic, that most farm owners could actually relax after finishing work in their fields much faster, than before the advent of electricity. It powered labor-saving appliances in the farmhouse and machines in the barns powered water pumps for irrigation and cisterns for running water at kitchen sinks and indoor bathrooms. (Reinhardt, Ganzel, 2003). Even the humble home lawn is being mowed and kept tidy with the help of the electric mower. Apart from the utility that it provides, electricity has made safe daily life. In the absence of electricity, people depended on candles and gas lamps to illuminate the evenings, which did result in accidental fires. The light bulb has dispelled the darkness without any threat to life and property. The humble Chr istmas light has replaced the candles put up on trees and its safety aspects cannot be doubted. Salvation Living in a country where we are entitled to freedom of religion, many of us have grown to have our own beliefs and ways of viewing religion on a whole. There are others who have been pressured by family or friends to believe in God and him alone. Sometimes with the pressure of others, we can begin to believe in something that we truly do not feel is right. In the essay ââ¬Å"Salvationâ⬠by Langston Hughes, the main character faces a struggle of wanting to be saved by God. Does he want to be saved for his sake? Or has his salvation been influenced and forced upon by family members? Our main character and narrator in ââ¬Å"Salvationâ⬠goes by the name of Langston. In this essay we see that Langston may have not gotten up and went to the altar if it wasnââ¬â¢t f or his fellow peer Westley. Westley, who he knows did not see the light nor feel something happen to him inside, marched up to the altar after realizing him and Langston were the only two children left awaiting salvation. The pressure Langston felt of being the only child on the bench, also made him get up and pretend to be saved and see Jesus. Every village and town around the world dream to become an urban center with all the amenities that a human would want, since urbanization is a symbol of growth and development. One of the major contributors to the urbanization of the current cities all around the world is the continuous evolvement of technology. The advancement in science and technology lead to a place where almost everything can be done for the humans, from transport using Segway to communication through the various mobile devices. Hence, it is no exaggeration to say that without the various inventions and discoveries man would have been in the early-man age itself. How Technology Influenced Industrial City A city would have to grow in three major directions to reach a significant development state namely the economic dimension, socio-political dimension and the physical dimension which would engage four important factors that are needed to develop a city, namely proximity, production, capitalization and Management. All the above mentioned factors are heavily influenced by various technologies. Note that the modern cities today are no more stand-alone centers working by their own. Every city is connected to every other city in the state, country and globe making the concept of globalization a reality. It is only through the various forms of technology and the industrial revolution this has been possible (Narula, 2014). Below are the specific technologies that played a key in development of industrial cities. Transportation technology It all started with the invention of wheel that man has developed to carry load around. The simple concept of wheel today has come far from its initial development phase. With the ability to move agricultural produce from one place to another through roadways, it had become easier to establish an industry in one place. The produce from here was exported to several countries especially that in Europe through remodeling the classic steam engine and hence coming up with abundant opportunities of imports and exports. Later on the same had rapidly developed through the growth in roadways, railways, canal systems, waterways and the airways reducing the time needed to transport significantly. Power Technology Sourcing energy was a major challenge before industrial revolution. The technology to mold earth materials to form energy was one of the major achievements. Initially with the help of the wheel itself, water and wind sources where vaguely used to produce energy. However, the actual increase in power generation was seen after coal could be used to generate energy (Fernihough, 2014). This helped in researching further to find several other materials found in the ground such as the current day petroleum which is a major contributor to several energy sources such as fuel and LPG. Understanding and developing energy from natural resources at a large scale had further quenched the need for energy. Generation of Hydroelectric power from dams, power from wind energy and solar energy have all made the sourcing of energy look infinite. Communication Technology Imagine a world without a mobile phone. Today millions of bytes of data travels around the world in split seconds. This has come a long distance from the Morse code that was initially developed for military use. The introduction of telegraph helped in long distance communication which was later replaced by the telephone, where technology allowed voice over distances. Then came the era of radio communication and televisions where information in both audio and video format could be transported in long distance, restricting it to a one way communication (Castells, 2013). These enhanced the concepts of broadcasting allowing cities to communicate to other parts of the world informing what is what. The advent of internet is by far the biggest network through which one can communicate from anywhere to anywhere and the adoption of wireless technology has made communication look seamless. Conclusion The concept of urbanization started with the industrial revolution which was majorly dependent on the development of three technologies namely the transportation technology through which moving goods have become extremely easy, power technology through which power was sourced from coal, petroleum and other natural resources producing sufficient energy for the city to rapidly progress and communication technology that has brought down the barriers in global communication. Introduction Over the years of technological advancement, the changes that the world has seen through the industrial revolution and information revolution, influence nature of work significantly. The structure of working, organizational structures that adopted various work environments using models such as the Holarctic model and the flat structure model and importance being placed on human resources are the most common examples to understand that the world has moved far beyond the traditional work structure, where certain people did certain things under certain commands (Alvesson, 2015). The options available to a person has increased significantly and so the major change that has happened in the nature of work is the change in employment. Employment Changes The first change that was seen in nature of work was the division of work into three major sectors. The primary sector who worked with the resources, the secondary who were involved in industrialization and the tertiary or the well-known service sector. It is obvious that these changes were however bound to happen. But the actual changes that revolutionized the way one worked is the changes in employment. Change is the concept of doing things in a new or a different way. Change is the only constant is one of the most heard terms and it is obvious given the very curious nature of man to develop and grow. During the industrial revolution, labor unions were formed through which communication was made to the top management in a company. At the same time, the number of people unemployed were significantly high given that job opportunities were restricted to hard labor rather than skilled labor and innovative ideas have hardly seen light. It was during this time literacy was encouraged to have more educated people working in various budding companies which resulted in overeducated people who were either underpaid or unemployed. This increasing capacity of workforce has brought on several changes to the traditional work system. Instead of working full-time, part time jobs starting popping up given that more number of people could be employed through one organization and work could be done 24x7. Though this helped in a decrease of underemployment that change was insignificant. As technological advanced products where easily available and information technology was seeing a rapid growth and of course the frustration of not being able to earn enough has brought in self-employment where an advocate rather than joining a firm opened their own consultancy (Gindling, 2014). The above mentioned progress is the most important change in the nature of work as the increase in responsibilities of an individual gradually saw growth at the same time curbed the concept of unemployment. Though structural changes drew a picture of who could work were actual work was achieved through employment changes. People were given a chance to harness their capabilities to achieve far and beyond and this was lacking in the traditional work modes. In todays world, people are not restricted to one job. One can do multiple jobs and own several businesses expanding their exposure to the world. Digitization has further changed employment where one could work from the comfort of their home and need not actually go to work (Baptista, 2013). Today, people are employed through Instagram where posting pictures can fetch you considerable amount of money. Change in employment is hence, the most important change as it has directly influenced the lifestyle and living conditions of people Conclusion Nature of work has seen several changes over the years. The two major changes that could be easily spotted where dividing work into sectors and changing the way people worked. Though segmentation of work provided a platform to divide human resources and their occupation, it is the continuous and rapid change in employment that have affected the way humans live their life. The declination of labor union, increase in the need for educated resources, increasing literacy rate, increasing unemployment that lead to the concepts of part time employment and self-employment are all major phases of employment changes. Thats worth any price to me, any price at all. (LOOKS IN MIRROR AGAIN) Oh, please, make him think Im still pretty! (AFTER A BEAT) No no, I should give Jim more credit than that. He doesnt love me for my hair! That would be silly. No, he loves me for me; he loves me for who I am, not for what I look like! Start Programming C With raspberry Pi This set of instructions wont suit everybody but Ill try to be as generic as possible. I installed the Debian Squeeze distribution, so the programming tutorials are based on that. Initially, Im starting off by compiling programs on the Raspi but given its relative slowness to any PC in the last ten years, its probably best to switch to developing on another PC and copying the executables over. Ill cover that in a future tutorial, but for now, its about compiling on the Raspi. Preparing for Developing The starting point is you have a Raspi with a working distribution. In my case, its Debian Squeeze which I burnt with instructions from the RPI Easy SD Card Setup. Make sure you bookmark the Wiki as its got tons of useful stuff. If your Raspi has booted and youve logged in (username pi, p/w raspberry) then type gcc - v at the command line. Then I issued this command: gcc -v l.txt To get the above listing into the file l.txt that I could view and copy on my Windows PC. Even if you are compiling on the Raspi, you can edit source code from your Windows box and compile on the Raspi. You cant just compile on your Windows box using say MinGW unless your gcc is configured to output ARM code. That can be done but lets learn to walk first and learn how to compile and run programs on the Raspi. Read up on Cygwin and MinGW. GUI or Terminal Ill assume that you are new to Linux, so apologies if you know it already. You can do most of the work from the Linux terminal ( command line). But it can be easier if you fire up the GUI (Graphical User Interface) to have a look around the file system. Type startx to do that. The mouse cursor will appear and you can click in the bottom left-hand corner (it looks like a mountain( to see the menus. Click on Accessories and run File Manager to let you view folders and files. You can close it down any time and return to the terminal by clicking the little red button with a white circle in the bottom right-hand corner. Then click on Logout to return to the command line. You may prefer to have the GUI open all the time. When you want a terminal click the bottom left button then click Other on the menu and Terminal. In the Terminal, you can close it by typing Exit or click the Windows like x in the top right-hand corner. Folders The Samba instructions on the Wiki tell you how to setup a public folder. Its probably best to do that. Your home folder (pi) will be readonly and you want to write to the public folder. I created a sub-folder in public called code and created the hello.c file listed below in it from my Windows PC. If you prefer to edit on the PI, it comes with a text editor called Nano. You can run it from the GUI on the other menu or from the terminal by typing sudo nanosudo nano hello.c The sudo elevates nano so it can write files with root access. You can run it just as nano, but in some folders that wont give you write access and you wont be able to save files so running things with sudo is usually best. Hello World Heres the code: #includeint main() {printf(Hello World\n);return 0;} Now type in gcc -o hello hello.c and it will compile in a second or two. Does Sex Sell
Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape advertisements. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. This is a multi billion dollar industry and advertisers study many ways that they can attract people's attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products. Evan Williams, a company who sells whiskey, released a print ad of a young woman dressed in her Sunday best on one side of the advertisement saying ââ¬Å"the longer you waitâ⬠. On the other side they have a picture of the same woman as an adult dressed in a sexual manner saying ââ¬Å"the better it getsâ⬠. In the middle of the ad is a bottle of their whiskey and next to that it says ââ¬Å"aged seven yearsâ⬠. An analysis of the Evan Williams advertisement will include the appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos. The target audience is both males and females in their late teens to mid twenties. This company gets the male side of the equation by getting their attention and interest drawn to the attractive woman on the right with bright colors, drawing your attention there, as well as the bottle of whiskey which is right in the middle of the page. One way to try and get the females to look at the advertisement and read it is by showing a very plain girl who seems to be very typical of girls during their younger years. On the side of that picture they show the same girl who now has become a woman, and is very attractive and just seems so much more powerful and sure of herself. One way that you can achieve that is to drink Evan Williams Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. I feel that this advertisement is not very ethical at all. They send the message that if you do not wear sexy clothes and try and act sexy then you are not good enough. The logic behind the advertisement is almost in all essence, sexual. They are using a woman who is very attractive with bright colors standing next to a bottle of whiskey. As well, they try and use their slogan that goes with their product and apply it to a completely different situation with a woman. They show how much ââ¬Å"better it getsâ⬠when it is aged seven years. This is very degrading to the woman because they portray her as being ugly in the first photo, but after seven years, less clothing, and makeup she is much better. There is nothing wrong with the girl on the left who is just plain and simple. When you have to wear something sexual to get noticed it just continues to drain away from the collective respectability of our society. They try to play sexual emotions in this advertisement. They show an attractive woman and a bottle of whiskey. They try and make it seem that if you drink their product that you can get this woman. Also they try and use the emotions of the females talking about how a decent looking woman can become very attractive. The newer picture also is more vibrant plus she is wearing a lot more sexually provocative clothing than her old self, who is covered up and not showing any skin. It also seems to draw onto girls that have a lower self esteem. Showing that you will become a much happier person if you are good looking and dressed very sexually, than if you are not better looking. Personally I think that this is an unethical dilemma that we face in society today. Using sex to sell products is something that companies should stay away from. Depicting images of people for personal gain is not right in my opinion. Unfortunately in our society this form of advertisement is accepted. This ad is although one that does appeal to its targets by using clever wording.

Australian rules is set in a small rural town, where the relationships between the white townspeople and the Aboriginal people on the mission are complex, conflicted and marred by deeply entrenched racism. The local football team in many ways serves to represent the town, it reflects the conflicted relationship between the white people and the Aboriginal people- we begin to understand this as the film unfolds. Other themes inherent in the film are themes of family, love, loyalty and violence- the secrecy of domestic violence and the more overt forms of racial violence that spill out onto the public spheres of the football field and the pub. The opening narration informs us that half the football team is Aboriginal and that there would not be a football team without the Aboriginal players, therefore we understand how the town team relies on the talent and number of the Aboriginal players. We then witness the contradiction of the white and Aboriginal boys playing side by side as team members followed by the social segregation between the members after the match. This segregation is highlighted by Blacky (a white boy from town) and Dumby (an Aboriginal boy who is the best player on the team) whose friendship transcends these borders and we also witness ways that certain adults culturally impose this segregation between the white teenager and Aboriginal teenagers. In one of the beginning scenes, just after a football match, Dumby and Blacky want to ââ¬Ëhang outââ¬â¢ together, but an older friend takes Dumby back to the mission and Blacky cannot follow. Blacky, Clarence and Dumby all call out to each other ââ¬ËNukki n yaââ¬â¢ and this use of Aboriginal language between two Aboriginal teenagers and Blacky the white boy signifies the level of their friendship.

My beliefs essays The idea of putting another human being to death is hard to completely imagine. I think the emotions involved in carrying out a death sentence on another person, regardless of how much they deserve it, is beyong my own understanding. I know it must be painful and sickening. However, this act is sometimes necessary and it is our responsability as a society to see that it is done. There are many reasons why I am in favor of the death penalty. It prevents the murderer from ever murdering again, it removes the burden from taxpayers, it is an efficient way to lower crime in this country, and it is also a good punishment because people in I feel strongly toward using the death penalty as punishment for unspeakable crimes. I feel that it is an obstacle for criminal activity because of its severity and it will never allow a murderer to kill again and destroy another family. I do, however, feel that restrictions should be put on its uses. Not all crimes deserve the death penalty. Let the punishment fit the crime. If a criminal performs an intentional cruel murder he should be put to death. It is that simple. If the convicted offender shows no remorse for his actions, then the decision should be even easier. Repeat offenders and people who enjoy killing do not The death penalty is the only method that completely separates murderers from our society. Supporters of the death penalty ask themselves the same question, why should I have to pay to support a murderer for the rest of his life? Why not execute them and save our society the cost of their keep? I dont think it is fair for us to pay so they can have all the luxuries they have in prison. Shouldnt they be miserable and have to work for the bare necessities, just like the Crime in todays world has become more gruesome ...

These colleges are much less tolerant of alcohol and drug use than liberal colleges. Also, the armed service academies are known for being conservative. They have many more rules than the average college regarding personal appearance and conduct. Finally, the most conservative colleges often reflect the political leanings of their locations. Many of the most conservative colleges are located in conservative states. Examples of conservative colleges in conservative locations include Clemson University (South Carolina), Utah State, and the University of Alabama. However, there are conservative colleges in liberal states. Pepperdine and Thomas Aquinas College are conservative colleges in California, but theyââ¬â¢re both Christian colleges. Possible Advantages of Attending a Conservative College If you're a self-described conservative, you may be more comfortable and happy at a college with many other conservative students. At very liberal colleges, students are often not that accepting and think negatively of conservatives. If you attend a conservative college, youââ¬â¢re more likely to meet people who share your political and social views, and you won't be ostracized for your beliefs. Also, at a conservative college, the faculty and administration are more likely to accept or believe in conservative values.Studies have shown that college faculty tend to be much more liberal. US Military Academy Possible Disadvantages of Attending a Conservative College Depending on your beliefs and your ideal college experience, conservative colleges may not be a good fit for you. On issues of sexuality, conservative colleges are less likely to have resources for and be accepting of LGBT students. Similarly, the students at conservative colleges are more likely to be opposed to gay marriage. If you are looking for a college where LGBT students are welcome, you may feel like a misfit at a conservative college. Conservative colleges tend to have more structure. If you prefer more freedom and independence to direct your education and social lives, then you may feel restricted by the discipline of conservative colleges. For instance, some colleges have harsh rules regarding when you can have visitors in your dorm, drinking, and drug use. Finally, if you want a college where a wide range of students attend and where you can have your beliefs more regularly challenged, conservative colleges may be too homogeneous for your tastes. Conservative colleges tend to attract primarily students of conservative leanings. If you want a more liberal environment or a wide representation of beliefs, conservative colleges may feel one-note for you. I tried to include positive and negative aspects of each school related to its very conservative environment. Texas AM I absolutely love my school. There is a strong love and passion for the university reflected every day on campus. Most importantly, the importance of being honest and having strong character is reinforced at Texas AM University. I would not have wanted to have attended any other university. After receiving my undergraduate degree in Agricultural Economics-Finance and Real Estate, I decided my time here was not over. I will now be attending graduate school to pursue my Masters of Real Estate. If I could do it all over again, I would not change a thing. Texas AM has to have the most ignorant, absurdly extremist right-wing culture I have ever encountered. I consider myself a conservative, but the sheer amount of bigotry and intolerance at this school is simply unacceptable for what is supposed to be an educated environment. I was always told that college was meant to expose you to a diverse group of people and help you prepare for a globalized world. AM does the opposite. It is a sheltered bubble for racist, homophobic, ethnocentrism coupled with extreme Christian and Republican views. Any sense of worldly knowledge, open-mindedness, or cultural exposure is met with disdain if not outright hostility. Brigham Young University I love attending Brigham Young University because it provides a learning environment that is compatible with my religious beliefs. The surrounding mountains are spectacular, and there are plenty of museums, theaters and libraries nearby. I hate the lack of diversity. I feel like although my classes are amazing, I'm not learning real life lessons because I'm in a Mormon bubble. However, there are a lot of cool opportunities. I love my professors and it's easy to get involved. US Military Academy Excellent options. You'll be making a lot of money. And people will want to hire you after the army. Drug tests are monthly, no civilians are allowed in cadet area, you cannot leave post hardly ever unless you are a senior, and you better drive the speed limit on post or you'll get pulled over. Grove City College My school has high academic, extracurricular and moral expectations. While others may dislike the high pressure to excel in multiple areas, Grove pushes us to do our best - to strive to reach our potential. In addition, Grove has a close-knit community. The school promotes and provides many opportunities for forming close connections with others. The campus is beautiful and the professors are superior. Grove City is a great college. Inter-visitation hours (where boys can go into girls dorms and vice versa) include Wednesdays from 7-10 PM, Fridays from 7PM-12 AM, Saturdays from 1PM-12AM, and Sundays from 1-10PM. While a boy/girl is your room, the door must be open 4 inches and a light other than the TV has to be on. You may think that those are just rules and people probably don't follow them. You would be wrong. Everyone follows them. If you have a boy in your room, you have to sign him in with your RA and then they go around during their shift to check to make sure your door is open and they can see a light. If they don't, they knock and come in to tell you to keep the door open or to turn the light on. Time limits are strict too; you gotta have them out right on time or the RA will kick them out. I'm not joking. This really happens. I've heard of people sneaking in on other days, but I've never seen it myself. There's no alcohol on campus and even if there is it's hidden away in someone's room who probably isn 't going to share. Grove City College How Should You Use These Lists of the Most Conservative Colleges? If you want to go to a very conservative college, you should research the colleges that interest you on the Niche and Princeton Review lists to determine if theyââ¬â¢re schools you should apply to or attend. There are many factors to consider to determine if a college is a good fit for you including location, selectivity, support services, and the majors offered.Look at the schoolââ¬â¢s website, and use guidebooks, college finders, search websites, and other ranking lists to help you in the college selection process. If possible, consult with teachers, counselors, parents, current students, and alumni. What If You Want to Go to a Conservative College, but a School You're Considering Isn't on the Lists? Just because a school didnââ¬â¢t make either list doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that itââ¬â¢s not conservative. Look at the schoolââ¬â¢s website to see if there are student groups that are aligned with your political and social views. There may be student groups for Republicans, conservative politicians, or members of the NRA. Sometimes, there will be an organization contact listed on the website. If so, you can contact a representative of the organization and ask about the atmosphere on campus. Also, you can consult other sources that evaluate or grade how conservative a college is. On the Niche profile for each college, under "diversity" for each school's guide, there is a category called "political activity" that describes the political activity on campus. For example, this is how Duke's political activity is described: Duke, like most universities, has a strong liberal streak, but conservatives have made their voices heard, as well. There are a variety of political organizations on campus that are populated by a significant percentage of the student body. Students advocate for a wide range of political causes, and the University regularly schedules guest political speakers, which are usually very well attended. For example, in 2010, more than 1,000 tickets to see Al Gore lecture sold out in a matter of minutes. Also, on the College View college finder, you can select that youââ¬â¢re ââ¬Å"only interested in schools with a very conservative climateâ⬠and search for colleges that fit that criteria, and there are 20 other search categories to help you narrow your college search. Finally, remember that the political leaning of a college is often reflective of the area where the college is located. For example, colleges in the Northeast tend to be more liberal, and colleges in the South tend to be more conservative. You can determine if a specific city or town is liberal by looking up the candidates it supported in the last election and its views on various political and social issues. Keep in mind that there are conservative cities in liberal states and vice versa. Also, Christian colleges and service academies are typically more conservative regardless of their locations. Exploitation of Indigenous Peoples Essay The Native Americans were slaves from the north to the South of the Americas and right across the North American continent. The percentage of Native American slaves was larger than black slaves and they were enslaved far longer than Black slaves. Native Americans were slaves for about 500 years, from the 1400s to the 1900s. Native Americans slaves were for 200 years before African Americans made it to the new world. The slaves of Native American were shipped to several areas around the world, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. [1] Native Americans were slaves even after slavery was removed because they were not citizens and the laws did not apply to them, the first Native American group was under Columbus, about 200,000 natives were harshly enslaved by him. Only 500 survived by the year 1550 and the group were extinct before 1650. [2] When Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in the late 1400s, his goal was to take all it natural resources and take it to Spain, he named it the new resource for Spain. Columbus figured an opportunity to convert the natives to Christianity, to provide another trade point with his mother country, and to learn about a vast extent of the agriculture and animals, as well as interesting cultures that the Old World had ever seen. However, one of the strongest causes of this difference in objectives was Hernando Cortes. Hernando Cortesââ¬â¢s purpose for the occupation of present-day Mexico was the conquest of the native peoples. Through harsh force and dishonesty, he destroyed the native tribes, making the Aztec Empire his own empire. In Bartolome de Las Casas writing about the indigenous peoples, witnessed a massive murder of the original people of Cuba, and became an opponent to the violent conversion of the Native Americans. He is considered the Father of Liberation Theology, arguing with Juan Gines de Sepulveda. De las Casas argued that Native Americans should be treated as other Spanish subjects of the king. He suggested that instead of making the Native Americans slaves, the Spanish should ship Africans to the New World for use as slave labor. [3] Alonso Zuazo said in his writings about the native Americans that the. Indians would serve as slaves for the Europeans in the sugar cane plantation in the coasts of Northern Africa. The main thing he was focused on was when the enslaving of the natives was failing in the sixteenth century; they wanted to replace them with slaves from western Africa. He found out that Africans were better slaves than the Native Americans because they came from agricultural societies and they know about agriculture more than the Native Americans. [4] Native Americans interacted with enslaved Africans in every way possible. Native Americans were enslaved along with Africans, They worked together, lived together in the same houses, produced recipes for food, shared herbal remedies, myths and legends, and in the end they breed together. Because both races were non-Christian, Europeans considered them under the Europeans. They worked to make enemies of the two groups. In some areas, Native Americans began to slowly engage with white culture. Africans were not affected with the conditions and diseases. It was because the Africans were already in contact with the Europeans when they had started trading with one another. Europeans felt they could handle the climate because of their skin color. Many Native Americans started to die because of the diseases. A lot of the Native Americans also started to escape and fight back, and many of them died. They also felt that Africans were cheaper. The Native Americans were less resistant to the diseases that the Europeans brought with them. In North America, the conquerors at first werent thinking of taking take Native Americans as slaves because they lived a harsh life that needed to be at peace with the Natives to continue. There were more Africans available and the Europeans found it more meaningful to buy Africans from Africans than to attempt to capture Indians. Bacillus anthracis, the organism that causes anthrax, has been bandied about the media and the American public has been saturated by stories of possible cases and fatalities. One agent not often discussed but every bit as horrifying as anthrax is smallpox. Smallpox is an acute, highly contagious virus disease characterized by prolonged fever, vomiting, and pustular eruptions that often leave pitted scars, or pockmarks, when healed as defined by Websterââ¬â¢s New World College Dictionar y. Smallpox, commands respect and the concern of the American public along with that terrorism, of the biological variety, however improbable, is very possible. à à à à à Smallpox was once large in scope before vaccinations. At one point or another, everyone was going to contract it. A release of smallpox in aerosol form would scatter readily, and because of its stability in aerosol form would prove very formidable even in a small dose. Even mention of a group of smallpox cases can cause national panic and a possible public outcry for national emergency control measures to be taken. Navy Chief Petty Officer Medal of Honor Recipients
The Chief Petty Officer is a rank in the U.S. Navy just above the rank of the Petty Officer First Class. They serve both as leaders and technical experts.à Promotion as a Chief Petty Officer requires superior evaluation and time in service. The Navy Medal of Honor is Americaââ¬â¢s oldest and still continuing award. The Medal of Honor is the supreme award in the United States of America for bravery in wars.à Any member of the Armed Services of the United States who performs exceptionally in his field of warfare during martial operations risking his life to protect the interests of the country is awarded the Medal of Honor. Since everyone in the Armed Services has values of bravery and selflessness, the recommendation for this award is made with the greatest care and consideration. When the Medal was initially awarded during the Civil Wars, it was the only medal for bravery in wars; but during the Spanish American War, it became the highest honor, with many other medals being given for valor in wars. Apart from the respect the Medal entails, the recipients have many other privileges like increased monetary benefits, wearing their uniforms wherever they choose to, and attending Presidential inaugurations. Even the children of the recipients of the Medal of Honor enjoy privileges. If they are qualified and desire to attend the U.S. military academies, they can do so without any restrictions of quotas. So far, more that 3400 Medal of Honor awards have been given. Getting the prestigious Medal would be the proudest moment of any serviceman, and John Finn hadà the taste of it when it was placed around his neck in recognition for his valor in the Second World War. Born in Los Angeles, California, on July 23, 1909, he enlisted in the Navy in 1926 and served as a Chief Petty Officer. John Finn was awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor for his conspicuous heroism and gallantry while at the Naval Air Station Kahoehe Bay, Hawaii, during the air raid by Japan, which targeted the facility.à With a machine gun, Chief Finn effectively fired at the enemy planes. Though he received severe wounds, he put up a brave fight and created great havoc to the enemy planes. His action during the attack was indeed amazing. George Brady was yet another proud possessor of the Medal of Honor. He was born on September 7, 1867.à He was a Chief Gunnerââ¬â¢s Mate in the U.S. Navy.à George Brady was awarded the Medal of Honor for his exceptional performance in the Spanish American War. George Brady proved a real asset to the U.S. forces. He was on board the torpedo boat Winslow when enemy forces targeted it. The boat was extensively exposed to bombs and suffered great damage. He repaired the steering gear and promptly maintained watertight integrity and thus saved the vessel.à His masterly skills and untiring loyalty to duty was greatly appreciated, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Though every serviceman fights for the country risking his life, such events, which depict individual courage and bravery, are the grounds on which a recommendation for the Medal of Honor is made.à The worth of the Medal of Honor is soà great that senior officers and even the President salutes the Medal, thereby the recipient wearing it. The Relationship Between Religion and Morality
Morality (sometimes called ââ¬Å"true moralityâ⬠or ââ¬Å"high moralityâ⬠) should be distinguished from those rules which are simply those which are considered necessary for the efficient running of a society. Such rules of a society are enshrined in law, custom and convention; and are supported and enforced by society through the legal system and public opinion. These rules are usually obeyed because of self-interest, a kind of ââ¬Å"social contractâ⬠in which, for example, we agree not to steal from anyone else in the society if they agree not to steal from us. In very early societies these social rules were supported by religion, and presented as behaviour which the gods insisted humans obeyed. It is arguable that some (ie numbers 5-9) of the Ten Commandments (13th Century BCE) are just such social rules. However such a system of social rules may break down, particularly in a secular or pluralistic society. For example some people may consider that the society in which they live is unfair, and only benefits certain groups in it; or the legal system may be too inefficient to prevent other people stealing. In such situations individuals may think it is no longer beneficial for them to continue to agree to the social contract, and then there would be no compelling reason why they should continue to obey society's laws. What we consider to be true morality is different from social rules in two important respects: 1. It is based on real concern for others as human beings of equal value to ourselves 2. Our motivation for behaving morally is that such behaviour is ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠and we feel we ââ¬Å"oughtâ⬠to do it, even when it is inconvenient to ourselves. Is Morality dependent upon Religion? The evidence to support this view is: * All religions insist upon a moral code as a central part of the religious life. * Even non-religious people when discussing where ethical values came from will refer to religious sources, such as the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20. 2-17), or the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5. 3- 7.27). * When people (eg newspaper reporters) require an expert opinion on moral issues they will ask religious leaders. * People expect higher standards of moral behaviour from religious people (a story of an adulterous vicar is more likely to appear in the newspapers that a similar tale about a bank manager ââ¬â unless, of course, the latter is a churchwarden!). * Even in our largely secular society, ââ¬Å"highâ⬠morality is often referred to as ââ¬Å"having Christian valuesâ⬠. * When people talk of someone being ââ¬Å"a good Christianâ⬠they are usually referring to their moral behaviour (ie how they treat others) and not to their doctrinal orthodoxy (ie whether they hold the traditional Christian beliefs). * True morality sprung up within religion. Arguably the first clear and unequivocal expression of true morality was the insistence by the Israelite prophet Amos in the 8th Century BCE that Yahweh (God) required honesty, truth and justice among his people more than religious observances (sacrifices, etc): ââ¬Å"Even though you offer me [Yahweh] your burnt offeringsâ⬠¦I will not accept them;â⬠¦but let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing streamâ⬠(Amos 5.22-4). * No society developed morality without having developed religion first, and all morality was originally proclaimed in the name of religion. It could be asserted, therefore, that morality is a product of religion, and true morality can only derive from religion. * Conscience can be interpreted as the voice of God telling us what is right and wrong. * It can be argued that even when societies lose their interest in practising a religion, they still maintain the moral values which that religion originally instilled into the society. Thus it can be claimed that in Britain today, where about 1 person in 30 is a practising Christian, the moral values which the society proclaims, believes in and tries to live by are Christian moral values (secularised). * It can be claimed that people will not chose to be moral unless encouraged to do so by religion. Is Morality independent from Religion? The evidence to support this view is: * Religions existed for many thousands of years before they developed a real morality. This suggests that morality is not an essential part of religion. * Atheists and agnostics, who do not believe in or follow any religion, can still live truly moral lives, with a selfless compassion for other humans. * Whole societies (eg China and the former Soviet States) can be officially atheistic, and there is no evidence that such countries or governments are necessarily more wicked than ones which claim to be religious states. * The origin of moral values can be explained in terms of Evolutionary Ethics (ie as societies develop and become more complex and sophisticated so social rules become more demanding, evolving into true morality). * Conscience can be explained in other ways (eg Sigmund Freud's concept of the internalisation of parental norms). * Agriculture, families, medicine and learning all developed within a religious context, as did morality. They have now all entered the secular domain, and are considered independent of religion, so the fact that morality developed in a religious context does not mean that it is necessarily dependent upon religion. * Plato posited the ââ¬Å"Euthyphro Dilemmaâ⬠which raised the question that good must be independent of God, or there would be no way of knowing if God's commands were actually good or not. Can we come to some kind of conclusion? How you evaluate the above evidence, and the conclusion you come to about where the balance of the evidence lies is something you have to do for yourself; but you must do it honestly, thoughtfully and intelligently. You may like to consider the following thoughts: * All people have some kind of beliefs concerning the nature of humanity, what is of real importance and value, and what one should do with ones life. * Religious people will refer to these beliefs as their religion, and associate with groups of like-minded people who share the same religion. Atheists and agnostics will tend to refer to their beliefs as their philosophy of life, and may consider them a more individual matter. * These beliefs (whatever we call them) affect our behaviour, and we legitimately judge a person's philosophy of life by how it affects their moral decisions and actions. * So ones beliefs determine ones morality.
